Launch of the Trans-Eurasia Information Network 2 (TEIN2) on 9 September 2006

The launch of the Trans-Eurasia Information Network 2 took place on 9 September 2006 in connection with the ASEM 6 Summit. The Trans-Eurasia Information Network 2 (TEIN2) project has established an advanced Internet-based telecommunications super-highway dedicated for collaborative use by the research and education communities in Asia-Pacific and Europe.

In addition to increasing direct Internet connectivity in the fields of research and education between Europe and Asia, another objective of the TEIN2 is to improve intra-regional connectivity within Asia and act as a catalyst for the development of national research networks in the developing countries of the Asia-Pacific region. Through innovative applications, many of which are of high societal impact, for example telemedicine and e-learning, TEIN2 will bring tangible benefits to the general public, rather than solely benefiting the scientific community.

Launched at the ASEM 3 Summit in Seoul in 2000, the Trans-Eurasia Information Network initiative took off with the installation of a France-Korea connection (TEIN1). In 2004, the second phase – TEIN2 – was initiated, with European Commission funding, to extend the success of this bilateral initiative to the regional level.
