ASEM@10: Connecting Civil Societies of Asia and Europe on 7 and 8 September 2006
The ASEM@10: Connecting Civil Societies of Asia and Europe event took place at the Parliament Building in Helsinki between 7 and 8 September 2006. The objective of the event was to bring together various ASEM actors to take stock of the 10 years of ASEM cooperation and to seek ways to introduce added value to the cooperation in the future.
The 60 people attending the two-day event represented NGOs, the business sector, the academic world, the media and research institutes. The Asia-Europe Business Forum and the Asia-Europe People's Forum were also represented. Senior Officials coming to Helsinki for the ASEM 6 Summit and editors participating in the Editors' Round Table meeting were also invited to the closing session which took the form of a high profile public debate on 8 September.
The event was based on a joint research project carried out by Finland and Japan, entitled "ASEM in its Tenth Year: Looking Back, Looking Forward". The report examines the ASEM process and provides recommendations for future work. The research project was brought to a conclusion in March 2006 and the ASEM@10: Connecting Civil Societies of Asia and Europe was a continuation of the discussion that the report generated.
The event marked the ten years of ASEM cooperation and offered an opportunity for dialogue between the representatives of governments, NGOs and business life. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) organised the event in collaboration with the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), the European Institute for Asian Studies (EIAS) and the Japan Centre for International Exchange (JCIE).
